Island's pets lucky to have shelter, animal control

Alameda's pets are fortunate to have two entities to provide high quality care for them. The Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter is a nonprofit that took over the management of the shelter on Jan. 1, 2012.The shelter's staff and volunteers provide a safe and compassionate place for abandoned pets until they find their permanent home. They receive food, medical care, lots of treats and love, are spayed, neutered and microchipped while they wait for their new person.

The City of Alameda employs animal control officers who are responsible for keeping Alameda safe and clean for pets and pet owners. The city has two animal control officers who have jurisdiction over Alameda, including Coast Guard Island.Animal control officers enforce the laws of the city. They pick up stray animals, patrol the streets, parks, beaches, and remove deceased animals. Alameda is well-known for being "the place to be" on Halloween. The much treasured "trick or treat" brings additional responsibilities for pet owners because of challenges on this spooky evening.

A door bell ringing constantly, strange looking people and children expressing excitement can be especially overwhelming for your cat and dog. Secure your pet indoors in a safe place for the evening. Keep candles, chocolate and decorations out of reach of your pet. Black cats are unfortunately targets so be especially careful with them.
