Jungle Island staff welcomed a very rare group of animals to its pride last week: Royal White tigers Chakra and Bindi, snow tigers Saraswati and Amar, and the king of the clan, Lord Ivory the white lion. The unique animals are a part of the park's new “Lion's Den” exhibit, where visitors can walk up to the glass to get an up-close look.
According to CBS Miami, the animals are old friends.“They've actually all been raised together, they're actually best friends so to speak so we should have no issues with that, they're just getting a really nice new home,” park curator Dr. Jason Chatfield told CBS Miami.White lions like Lord Ivory are rare in number, with only about 300 found in the world, according to a release from the park.
Their coloring is the result of a color mutation and they range from bright white to a "darker" blonde shade. The white tigers also have a genetic condition leading to the absence of the tell-tale orange coloring. Some white tigers have almost undetectable lighter stripes, and those who are completely white are known as snow tigers.

Owners to run 2-year-olds without race-day drugs
Hoping to show that horse racing can wean itself off its reliance on drugs, Barry Irwin has joined a group of prominent thoroughbred owners voluntarily pledging to run their 2-year-olds this year without any race-day medication. In doing so, they put themselves in the middle of a debate about the role of drugs in thoroughbred racing that is getting attention in Congress.
The group, featuring a stable of well-known names in horse ownership and breeding circles, vowed to compete in this year's 2-year-old season without race-day use of the commonly used anti-bleeding drug furosemide, which is marketed as Lasix and Salix. It's the only medication allowed to be given to horses on race day in the U.S. The drug is used commonly to treat pulmonary hemorrhaging in racehorses.
The drug is banned across much of the world because it is considered a performance enhancer.Irwin, whose Team Valor International won last year's Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom, said Thursday he hopes the willingness of some leading owners to compete without race-day use of the drug will change perceptions in the sport."Most of these guys are afraid to train without it, and they have scared the hell out of their owners, telling them all sorts of things could happen to their horses if they don't have them run on Lasix," he said. "I've been around long enough that I know that's not the case."

Boats offer club speed, variety
The Noank Rowing Club has been offering rowing classes for beginning through advanced rowers in Beebe cove for years, but until recently, it offered programs for all of those levels of rowers in the same beginners' boats. This summer, that will no longer be the case.Dinosaur Fossil Replica Landscape-Triceratops Skeleton. The club recently acquired two Olympic-quality boats to which the club's members now have access. These four-person sculling shells allow members to now get the feel of the highest quality of boat available today.
The boats were purchased from two different crew organizations in Boston and Narragansett, R.I. Recognizable by their yellow color, these shells are built using fiberglass and wood and are designed to cut through the water more quickly than the club's older boats, Dinosaur Skeleton Exhibition-T-Rex Fossil, many of which are designed for stability rather than speed. Not only are the new boats the fastest shells the club offers; they are also the best quality.
"These shells are Olympic quality and are built to be long lasting," said rowing instructor Kristen Negaard O'Brien. The boats also create new opportunities for the club. In past years, the club has used its old shells while competing in the Coast Weeks Regatta. This is a race at Mystic Seaport to which the club has only sent junior rowers in the past. Because of the newly-acquired, more advanced boats, the club will now be able to send older, more experienced rowers, called "masters," to the race.

Tour company rescues injured turtle
An injured sea turtle was flown by Aloha Airlines Cargo to O‘ahu for treatment of its wounds Tuesday. The turtle, estimated to be around 25 to 30 years old by the state's District Fisheries biologist Don Heacock, was discovered by an operator aboard Bali Hai Tours Tuesday morning near the Double Caves at Kalala‘u, said Mike Sheehan of Hanalei. Sheehan transported the injured turtle to the Aloha Airlines cargo terminal in Lihu‘e where they were met by Heacock.
"They saw some bubbles in the water and after diving to investigate, discovered the turtle which had sustained propeller strikes," Sheehan said. "They brought it back to Hanalei and washed out the wound with sea water before transporting."Heacock said the turtle sustained perforations in her right lung, her lower intestines are showing and there are indications of five or six propeller strikes on her shell. He called in that assessment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries office.
"Luckily, the propeller missed the turtle's spine (and) head," Heacock said. "The turtle is a healthy female and other than signs of a previous encounter with a shark, is fine."He said the turtle will be flown to O‘ahu and the care of George Balazs, the NOAA Fisheries Sea Turtle Research lead.Heacock explained that the use of fiberglass and pins are similar to human surgeries and are used to help the area heal from its injuries.

Friends seek traces of missing wild horse activist
After weeks without any news of her whereabouts, friends and family of Kim Remmel, a 47-year-old Arvada woman active in animal welfare causes, are appealing to the public for information that might help solve the mystery of her disappearance. Returning to Afghanistan.Remmel was last seen on May 25 and is believed to have left her residence early in the following morning.
Remmel was last seen by friends over dinner and was described as being "in a happy and relaxed frame of mind" that evening. She returned to her home, where she lives with her aunt and her cat, and left the next morning in her white pickup truck, taking her laptop computer. No one has heard from her since. Remmel advocated for wild horses and burros, was a vocal opponent of the government roundups of horses on public lands, and was involved in Belgian Malinois rescue and training. She liked to hike in Jefferson County open space areas and parks, including Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
Although the Find Kim Remmel Facebook Page describes her as "somewhat estranged" from some members of her family, the lack of contact with any friends -- as well as the fact that she left her cat behind -- has raised concerns. Her vehicle is described as being a white Mazda pickup from the late 1980s or early 1990s, with black trim and an older (non-fiberglass) black canopy, license plate 155XYX. The tailgate has only the letters NADA (or TADA) instead of MAZDA. Remmel sometimes wears glasses and may have been wearing a baseball cap or cowboy hat, as well as jeans and a T-shirt.
