Catskill hosts purrfect annual art show

This weekend, Catskill's cat-loving population purred and flocked to the streets as part of the Cat'n Around Catskill 2012.The number of cats shown this year might have been smaller than previous six showings, but 43 decorated fiberglass cats adorned the streets of Catskill as part of the summer-long arts event that has had more than 300 feline artwork displays in all.

This year's litter included a creation that looked like a rooster, another that resembled a soda vending machine, one shimmering in knight's armor and another that looked like a jack-o-lantern, according to an article in The Daily Freeman. The cat creations will be auctioned off at an annual gala at Historic Catskill Point on Sept. 30. The proceeds will be split between the artists and arts education, animal welfare, local non-profits, local food banks and future Catskill promotions.

The feline displays are scattered throughout Catskill, however most of the creations are show on Main Street, county Route 23 B and two cats will be on U.S. Route 9W in front of the Wine Cellar and McDonalds.  One cat display will be traded for a Rip Van Winkle statue in the village of Hunter.

U.S. Scientists Harness Thousands of Invisibility Cloaks to Trap a Rainbow

Harry Potter's disguise of choice isn't just for stalking the halls of Hogwarts sight unseen. Scientists from Towson University and the University of Maryland have harnessed the power of 25,000 invisibility cloaks to slow down—and even stop—light, producing what is colloquially known as a “trapped rainbow.” A mere 30-micrometers in diameter, each “cape” comprises a micro-lens that bends light around itself, effectively obscuring an area in its center.

Slowed-down light interacts differently with molecules than light traveling at regular speeds, which means that trapped rainbows can help identify biological materials based on how much light they absorb and emit. Applied to biosensors in fluorescence spectroscopy, they can also promote more-detailed analyses. The benefit of a biochip array is that you have a large number of small sensors, meaning you can perform many tests at once,” says Vera Smolyaninova, lead author of the study, which was presented in the New Journal of Physics on Friday. “For example, you could test for multiple genetic conditions in a person's DNA in just one go.”

Because it allows researchers to examine fluorescence at thousands of points simultaneously, the technology is the key to making “spectroscopy on a chip” a reality, 67 animals died at WB zoo in eight months,Smolyaninova adds. No spells, charms, or hexes necessary.Laid out uniformly on a 25-millimeter gold sheet, the materials form a first-of-its-kind array, manipulating bands of light through the intervening gaps to create the optical phenomenon.

67 animals died at WB zoo in eight months

Sources said 67 animals including tigers, lions, chimpanzees, marmosets, kangaroos, birds and snakes, died here between August 2011 and March 2012.The zoo had recorded 57 animal deaths in 2009-10 and 52 to 53 deaths in 2010-11.Among the animals that died are three of the six red kangaroos brought from Czech Republic in June 2011. Two new-born marmosets died in November 2011."The maximum number of casualties is among birds and reptiles. A total of 30  birds and 20 snakes have died over the past eight months,"a senior zoo official said.

According to former zoo inspector Swapan Ghosh, animal deaths in zoos are triggered by three factors-population of old and sick animals, lack of proper veterinary care and unforeseen incidents such as a disease outbreak."But 67 deaths in eight months, or one death in every 4 to 5 days, is highly unusual,"Ghosh, said. However, state Forest minister Hiten Burman claimed to be ignorant of the deaths."Is it true that 67 animals have died in eight months? I'm not aware of that. I'll have to inquire. I'll ask for a report from the zoo authorities,"Burman told Deccan Herald.

"In fact, neither the Zoo authorities nor the government has an idea of running the park. As the animals in the zoo are taken out of their natural habitat and placed in an artificial environment they always need special care. Their condition is not only delicate but fragile too and the zoo authorities need to take care of that but unfortunately enough these factors are never taken under consideration,"a former director of the Alipore Zoo told Deccan Herald.

Stuart man's replica of Carolina Snowball preserves rare albino dolphin's legacy

Like it is with many Baby Boomers, a discussion with Stuart's Kevin Vanacore, 58, soon turns to his greatest passion. It's not real estate or collector cars that gets Vanacore speaking with his hands. Instead, the Connecticut native lights up when he begins to speak about a dolphin. But not just any dolphin. This dolphin was special. This dolphin was albino. He eventually landed a job training dolphins by the end of the 1970s at Marineland near St. Augustine. But part of the reason he chose to pursue that profession was Snowball's fame. She was written about in newspapers, filmed in news reports and even had a story about her in Life Magazine.

Carolina Snowball was a common dolphin, a marine mammal 8 feet long and weighing about 400 pounds. She was unique in that she was truly albino, a rare genetic mutation that rendered her normally gray skin entirely white. She lived in the early 1960s and was first observed in the wild in her native waters of St. Helena Sound near Beaufort, S.C. Her strikingly snow-white skin made her a target for collection and controversy, but ultimately an ambassador for awareness.

Although Snowball died in captivity in 1965, Vanacore is committed to keeping her legacy alive. For Vanacore,Guam needs sustainable aquaculture, a property manager who moved to Stuart in September, Snowball was a huge influence on his life. To him, she was more important than Flipper, the 88-episode TV star from 1964 to 1967, mainly because Snowball was a single animal while Flipper was portrayed by several dolphins. Growing up in East Haven, Conn., Vanacore had a love for the water and the marine wildlife that inhabited it.

Guam needs sustainable aquaculture

Like farming chickens or pigs for your family to eat or to sell at the market, aquaculture is the practice of farming fish or shellfish for human consumption. And just like any animal farming operation, aquaculture involves the management of animal waste -- in this case, fish poop.Something that makes aquaculture unique is that all the animals and their waste are contained and suspended in water. Figuring out the best way to process this wastewater for the health of the animals and the surrounding environment is one of the greatest challenges with aquaculture.

Local resident Joan Cofac of Talofofo says she is concerned about the environmental impact of aquaculture in Guam. She questions whether we can trust that fish farms are operating responsibly. For the past 10 years, she says she's witnessed a decline in the water quality of Talofofo Bay, which she believes is due to the runoff coming from a fish farm up river."It used to be nice and clear, now it's cloudy. We can't swim in the bay anymore because we're told it's polluted," she says.

She is also concerned about the regulation of imported eggs for aquaculture. "Without testing these eggs, how do we know they are tilapia, and not an invasive frog species?"Without updated information on these issues, she feels that the public is left in the dark. If the industry was better regulated and citizens were better informed, then people could hold irresponsible fish farmers accountable for their actions. Until that happens, she says she "would like to see the industry closed."

Furniture and household items

Take furniture, rugs, bedding and clothing outside to dry as soon as possible. Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier to remove moisture or open at least two windows to ventilate with outdoor air. Use fans to circulate air in the house. If mold and mildew have already developed, brush off items outdoors to prevent scattering spores in the house. Vacuum floors, ceilings and walls to remove mildew, then wash with disinfectant. Wear a two-strap protective mask to prevent breathing mold spores.

Mattresses should be thrown away.Upholstered furniture soaks up contaminants from floodwaters and should be cleaned only by a professional.Wood veneered furniture is usually not worth the cost and effort of repair. Solid wood furniture can usually be restored, unless damage is severe.Toys and stuffed animals may have to be thrown away if they've been contaminated by floodwaters.

Photographs, books and important papers can be frozen and cleaned later. They should be dried carefully and slowly. Wash the mud off and store the articles in plastic bags and put them in a frost-free freezer to protect from mildew and further damage until you have time to thaw and clean them or take them to a professional.Wallboard acts like a sponge when wet. Remove wallboard, plaster and paneling to at least the flood level. If soaked by contaminated floodwater, it can be a permanent health hazard and should be removed.

Is Origami the Future of Tech ?

In 1996 a young mathematician and computer scientist named Erik Demaine became fascinated by a magic trick that Harry Houdini used to do before he made his name as an escape artist. The magician would fold a piece of paper flat a few times, make one straight cut with a pair of scissors, and then unfold the paper to reveal a five-pointed star. Other magicians built on Houdini's fold-and-cut method over the years, creating more intricate shapes: a single letter, for example, or a chain of stars. Is the Fiberglass in Your Attic or Walls Causing Cancer ?

It's an odd subject of study for a computer science professor, but Demaine had an unorthodox background. When he was hired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001, he was, at 20, the youngest professor in the university's history. Pale, thin, and soft-spoken, with a pickpocket's long fingers and a fox-colored ponytail, Demaine was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and raised by his father, Martin, a renowned glass blower.

When Demaine was six, he and his father started a puzzle company. When he was seven, his father took him out of school and they spent four years traveling the U.S., choosing their destinations together. They spent a few months in Florida, Demaine recalls, “because it was so flat and good for riding bicycles.” Martin home-schooled his son while they moved from place to place. The traveling stopped when Erik returned to Halifax to enroll in Dalhousie University at age 12.

Is the Fiberglass in Your Attic or Walls Causing Cancer ?

Fiberglass, also known as fibrous glass or glass wool, is a man-made fiber used to insulate homes, furnace filters, pipes, appliances and more; it's also used for sound control in airplanes and automobiles, and in certain curtains, roofing material and plastics. As its name implies, the main substance in fiberglass is glass, which is finely spun to form a mass that resembles wool.

When working with or installing this material, the small fibers can be swallowed or inhaled, where they may remain in your lungs for long periods of time, potentially leading to health problems like cancer.Since fiberglass first entered the market in the 1930s, it is now among the most widely used insulating materials in the world, which is why concerns that it may cause cancer need to be taken seriously.

Purchase Horse Trailers From Classified Site.Animal studies have shown that certain glass fibers can cause tumors in animals'lungs and other tissue sites, while cell studies have shown that certain fiberglass fibers may cause damage to DNA. Fiberglass was nominated as a top safety concern on the synthetic mineral fiber list for the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) back in 1994. At that time, it was listed as “reasonably expected to be a human carcinogen" by the National Toxicology Program (NTP).
