For most forms of biomedical waste, stainless steel tanks server as effective containment units. Biomedical waste or product can be especially dangerous because of its capacity to carry disease that can lead to epidemics amongst humans or animals. Stainless steel tanks offer airtight options that can successfully prevent contamination both from the outside elements and to the outside elements. Stainless steel is also not easily corroded, which adds a long-term reliability to their use. Acids or other corrosive elements present in many forms of biomedical waste do not pose a significant threat (in most cases) to these tanks or storage units.
Ethanol is a product that is ever increasing in popularity and use as cost of petroleum continues to rise across the entire globe. While it is an alternative to petroleum based fuel, it offers most of the same dangers. The chemical is highly flammable and can be toxic to both the environment as well as humans/animals if ingested (or even inhaled in quantity). As such, proper storage of these fuels is a must. While stainless steel tanks and other expensive metals offer possibilities, plastic storage units are most commonly used for ethanol due to its relative low cost, abundance, and plastic also offers resistance to sparks and electrical currents - reducing the risk of a freak fire.
Industrial waste is most feared for its potential harm to the environment as well as the possibility of carrying cancer-causing agents. Due to these dangers, it is typically stored deep underground out of reach of both people and the elements. In these situations, fiberglass tanks offer a good option due to their strength and reliability. Underground leakage could lead to many problems, including exposure to the water supply, so using tanks that are strong enough to hold up against underground pressure while remaining sealed is a must.

Austin Animal Center seeks volunteers
With the frigid temperatures, it's a good idea to bring your pets in for the night, especially on New Year's Eve."Fireworks scare the dogs. For those folks who have their animals outside, please bring them in for the evening, " said Chris Nobel of the Austin Animal Center. It never fails, the Austin Animal Center always takes in a few extra animals after the celebrations.
That's why they will be offering free microchips for any pets in Travis County leading up to the holiday.Volunteers are crucial to keeping Austin Animal Center going."We try to socialize them to make friends, try to bring them out of their shells and use to people again, " said one volunteer.Lindsay Sugarman and her 15-year-old daughter, Catherine have decided to become volunteers after the family lost their three-year-old cat Sanora.
"It teaches compassion, it teaches responsibility, " Sugarman said. All volunteers must go through a one-day training. Those younger then 15-years, will need to be accompanied by a parent."Doing something for the community, instead of just sitting at home and being lazy, "said Catherine. The mother and daughter duo hope to reunite with their lost family member Sanora, as they help other animals in the mean time.

Big memories of a small store
This is a good time of the year to write about going shopping in Metropolitan Arcadia and Winona. But that story will have to wait for another time.Readers have asked me to write more about the Waumandee General Store. Following is an imaginary tour. If you would like to see the store for yourself, a lot of the original store remains. Some has changed very little.
The hardwood floor is a favorite part. About half way back there is, or at least was, a noticeable "hump." Speeding a grocery cart over the hump was always fun.In the front are large plate-glass windows that Target Corp., Sears and other retailers have since copied. The windows in Waumandee are designed to bring natural light into the store. When I was young, a greenish fiberglass awning was there to shade the bright summer sun.
On the right, when entering, was a doorway to the "beer bar." Three families totaling about 20 adults and children made their living from the store and bar, so a variety of sales opportunities were needed. Additional clerks and butchers were employed.During the day, workers would divide their time between waiting on customers in the bar and checking out groceries in the store. In the evening, the door between the two businesses was closed and a bartender was needed. On Election Day, in spring and fall, the bar, like all in Wisconsin, was closed.

Minnesota horse owner charged with animal cruelty
A member of a Minnesota horse industry group has been charged with felony animal cruelty for allegedly failing to provide enough food or water for her 16 horses.Carol Dobbelaire, 63, of Buffalo, was suspended Wednesday from the Minnesota Horse Council, an umbrella group for the state's equine industry, the Star Tribune reported Thursday. The council's president, Dr. Tracy Turner, said Dobbelaire, who served five years as a director, will be banned from the organization if she's convicted on any count.
Dobbelaire was charged with two felony counts and six misdemeanors. Her husband Rick Dobbelaire, 47, also was charged. Court documents allege that some of their horses were so hungry they had begun eating away at the walls of their barn, possibly consuming the fiberglass insulation. Two were so emaciated they had to be killed.Dobbelaire told authorities that she and her husband were struggling financially to feed their horses. But Turner pointed out that Dobbelaire chaired a council fund that provides hay for horse owners who need it.
Carol Dobbelaire told the newspaper the couple has operated a refuge for neglected horses for years and often had thin horses they have been unable to fatten up. She said she would fight the charges.Another group, the Minnesota Horse Welfare Coalition, launched a "hay bank" this week to distribute hay to horse owners in need.A ton of hay costs $220, nearly double the $120 it cost a year ago, said Krishona Martinson, equine extension specialist for the University of Minnesota.

Animal Organizations Spreading Awareness Among Children
These Animal Organization camps teach children to respect all forms of life whether it is human or animal. Children are pure and innocent and they are considered as the future of tomorrow, so they must be given full awareness about the importance of animal life and how that will even affect our lives. Apart from hosting these Animal Charities camps we also encourage the school teachers and staffs to include trips to animal shelters like shelters for dogs, cats, horses or farm animals in their field trip programs for their students.
We also help educate the staff to teach their children and to make them aware that an animal is also a living being with feelings of joy and sadness, just like they have. We explain that, when an animal finds itself in a cage, it doesn't understand why it has been abandoned and it suffers from being locked up and surrounded by strangers and other animals that are sad, too. However at the end there are many number of animals that come up pouring in at these Animal Charities events or camps who are at worst of their conditions, either some are chained without proper food and shelter for long period or some are simply being used as a toy around their places and beaten up badly.
When animals come to such Animal Organization that provides aid and shelter, they are really had a hard life in the past and are in worst conditions. These people help them gain back their natural living standard and health by giving them proper food and a place where they can be free to play and act their natural behaviors. They will keep around the other animals of their breed and will be allotted an open place to move freely around.

How To Prepare For The Worst?
But countless creative people have decided they're not taking any chances. Yes, some have gone a bit too far, planning trips to the top of a mountain to ask aliens for help. Others, though, are thinking more clearly. After watching Roland Emmerich's sci-fi film "2012" an inventor named inventor Liu Qiyuan built an apocalypse survival ark called Noah. The amateur inventor hired ten workers and invested $288,000 to construct six capsules, each for $50,000.
Made of metal and fiberglass, the structures block radiation and water, he says. They're also equipped with leather seats, water and food. "Fourteen people could survive five months at sea," he claims. In England, though, many organizations view the hysteria as laughable. The AA told citizens: "Before heading off, take time to do the basic checks on your car and allow extra time for your journey."
A London Fire Brigade spokesman recommended: "Fit a smoke alarm on each level of your home, then at least you might stand a chance of knowing that the end of the world is nigh ahead of those who don't. If you survive the apocalypse you'll be alerted to a fire more quickly should one ever break out."And the RSPCA, one of England's biggest animal welfare charities, said: "Luckily for animals, they do not have the same fears of the future - or its imminent destruction - as us humans, so it is unlikely that our pets will be worrying about the end of the world.

Fresh calls for ban on live animal export
The footage aired on ABC television showed cows, purported to be from Australia, being repeatedly stung with electric prods in Israel's largest abattoir. It also showed an injured cow being dragged along the floor by a rope tied to its leg and other cattle being moved as they bled to death. The treatment has been condemned by the RSPCA in Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), and the National Farmers' Federation.
Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie said the incident made a mockery of the federal government's attempts to clean up the embattled industry. The live export trade does not have the support of the public and wasn't in the nation's interest, he added."China Entertainment Dinosaur models's way beyond time for the government to stop kowtowing to the industry and instead to start caring about animal welfare and public opinion," Mr Wilkie said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Effective safeguards must be put in place immediately and the trade stopped as soon as possible."The Australian Greens' animal like Artificial Brontosaurus Sculpture-Jurassic Park welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said the government's new live exports regulatory system had failed to protect animals sent abroad.Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig could no longer pretend that the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) was working effectively, sheadded."No amount of independent auditing or calm words from the minister can mend a system that is fundamentally flawed," Senator Rhiannon said in a statement.

Animal shelter construction to start next month
Construction will start in January on a $3.3-million animal shelter for Catawba County, a replacement for a 27-year-old facility that regularly operates 50 percent above its capacity. The roomier building with space to isolate sick animals would make it easier to cope with disease like the highly contagious upper respiratory infection that swept the building two years ago,Simulation dinosaur replica suppliers, forcing the county to kill all 200 animals held there. The building is now closed twice a year to sanitize all surfaces, while all its cats and dogs are held outside in temporarily kennels.
"Our No. 1 issue is overcrowding," said Bryan Blanton,Artificial Landscape, county emergency service director. The shelter, designed for 102 animals, has averaged 150 a day for the past two years. One day two years ago, the population hit 259 animals. That means multiple animals are held in the same kennel, which can lead to fights and illness.Dogs must be removed two and three times a day so their kennels can be cleaned. Kennels in the new building will have outdoor runs so the dogs can be herded outside so the indoor sections can be cleaned.
The new building will be built in Newton, off Radio Station Road, on the northwest side of the county government complex. The current shelter is nearby, on the south side of the complex, off Southwest Boulevard. It will be 17,000 square feet, with room for 233 animals. Edison Foard Inc., a Charlotte-based contractor, was the low bidder. The new building should open in spring 2014. It is designed to reduce energy consumption, with the extra cost of construction paying for itself in seven to nine years, a staff analysis said.

Various Window Screens and Their Screening Fabrics
Retractable windows screens are designed for the purpose of giving protection to your windows. These screens help to provide shade from the sun and enhance privacy and protection to your home from insects. Serene Window screens are ideal for most of the windows. Besides giving protection to your home, you can also get the clear outside view from your own room with the help of retractable screens.
This type of screen exactly fits within double-hung window tracks. You can get this type at various home improvement stores. Normally this screen is stuck below the lower sash of double-hung window and protected laterally by window tracks. You will also get a sliding device for making lateral adjustment to the screen.
Generally window screens are made with metal wire, synthetic fiber mesh as well as fiberglass extended in metal or wooden frame for covering an open window. The main objective of the screen is to keep away leaves, birds, debris, insects and other animals from coming into your building while allowing fresh air flow into your room.

Wildlife rehabber neglected animals
Papers lay on countertops as if someone had thrown them like confetti, and old supplies of animal feed slumped in corners. The room was filled with boxes. When Fox opened one of them, what she found almost took her breath away.Inside almost all of the boxes lay barely moving baby squirrels, raccoons and other wildlife. She scooped up an infant raccoon she was certain was dead, but it began to twitch in her hand."I couldn't believe it," she said, holding back tears. "It was cold. It was smelly. And when I picked it up, it started cooing and crying."
Fox had been volunteering at local wildlife rehabilitator Leslie Straub's Gainesville house for about two months when she made the grisly discovery. Both the State Attorney's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission charged Straub with a total of 24 wildlife rehabilitation violations. She could face a three-year suspended wildlife rehabilitation license for the charges.Straub said the charges took her by surprise, Dinopark Tyrannosaurus Rides in Outdoor, especially because she was inspected before without issue and cooperated with the state.
She said she received many more injured animals than usual this year, especially during the summer when Tropical Storm Debby passed through the area.Playground Show-Animatronic Allosaurus"It was a perfect storm," Straub said. "All of your energy is spent dealing with this influx of animals. Your normal routine is thrown off."She said she usually gets an influx of baby animals during spring and summer. The larger number of animals makes it more difficult to clean all of the animals' spaces.

Ocean City Maryland Family Vacation
Plop down on the free beach every morning. (You don't have to buy beach permits here.) Once you've sponged enough sun for the day,lay Piano Robot, head back to the hotel and refresh. Prepare yourself for any one of the assorted attractions this town offers. I recommend Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. (The cost for a family of four is about $36.) Ripley's is not hard to find - just follow the boardwalk to the building impaled by an angered fiberglass shark.
Inside you'll be witness to a slew of oddities including shrunken heads, a menagerie of multi-limbed and two-headed animals and a collection of structures built using everyday items like toothpicks and pins. There are three amusement parks making smiles, but my preference is for The Jolly Roger located off of the boardwalk. Costing about $60.00 for unlimited rides per family (Dinosaur Park Landscape), it has enough to offer for about three hours of giggles. Another idea is Frontier Town.
It boast a Frontier Town replica and adjascent water park. The real fun is at the water park. It is just small enough to keep your eyes on your kids and big enough to keep them busy. (Children 42" and taller are $14 while children under 42" are $12.) The park offers a few more wet amenities than Francis Scott Key resort like a lazy river, large wading pool, and a multi-slide faux conetoga wagon adds another treat for your youngins.

Learn How To Maintain Your AC Properly
The most basic maintenance step for an AC unit is to replace the air filters regularly or to have them cleaned. There are different types of filters and each would require a different treatment. The electronic types of filter do not have to be replaced right away but they should be cleaned regularly. The Fiberglass Animals-Cobra Snake Model
must be replaced at regular intervals.Be sure that the access panels on your unit are all in place. Check them to see to it that they are secure. You do not want those to become the entry points for small pests and animals which can cause damage to the interior of the unit.
See to it that the unit is still able to draw air from the outside. Owners commonly complain that their AC is not working only to find out that they have accidentally placed things on top of the air inlet outside Museum Exhibition Smilodon-Artificial Animals. That would prevent the unit from working or from cooling the air.You do not have to cover the condenser which is exposed on the outside. The device has been designed for being exposed to the elements so you need not worry about them being damaged by being exposed.
Run your AC several times during the period when you don't have a need for Artificial Jaguar Tiger Hunting. That would make sure that the device is still in running condition and that it can still function normally. While cleaning you AC is very important, refrain from cleaning it with hose and water on your own. You might risk being electrocuted by doing that. Cleaning the inside of the AC is best left to professionals.

Animal Experts Have Tips for Dealing With Fleas This Winter
Fleas are out there in massive numbers this year. In fact, experts say this season has been the worst for fleas in more than a decade.Fleas are everywhere and experts say it's because of the very productive mating season they had for the last several months. If you have a dog or cat, it's important to get a handle on the fleas early before you have to deal with an infestation."This has been one of the worst seasons for fleas I have ever seen," said Derek Holley.Holley owns grooming salon Hollywood Pets in Danville where lately it seems like they've seen more fleas than dogs.
"We've been here going on 5 years now. I don't remember ever going through as much flea product and doing as many flea baths as we have this year," he said. Dean says she's witnessed firsthand with her own dog Wally that some of the top flea medicines are not getting the job done."It seems to me that may have been losing some of its effectiveness, for me anyway. So I needed to try something else," she said.To kill the fleas, it is important to find the right product for the right case. For a quick fix, vets suggest a pill called Capstar. It can get rid of fleas on your dog or cat in less than two hours.
"It's great, it's magic. The fleas just drop off and it paralyzes the fleas and doesn't affect the dog at all," said Dr. Jeff Smith from Mount Hermon Animal Clinic. But according to Smith, studies show that products like Frontline and Advantix are still the best for keeping the fleas away. The key to getting results is giving your pet the medicine both properly and consistently.

ND voters reject animal cruelty measure
Veterinarians, animal shelters and others who care for and about animals had found them-selves on opposing sides over Measure 5, which would not have applied to production agriculture or to lawful activities of hunters, trappers, licensed veterinarians or scientific researchers, Artificial Brontosaurus Sculpture-Jurassic Park,or to people acting in defense of life or property.North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states without a felony animal abuse penalty.
"We're pleased that the North Dakota voters tool a closer look at this, Life Size Dimetrodon Model, and we want to continue now to further the work on animal protection and do it the right way," said Jason Schmidt, a rancher in Kidder County and chairman of North Dakota Animal Stewards, which op-posed Measure 5.He said his coalition will have a draft bill ready for the 2013 Legislature to stiffen penalties for animal cruelty, "and we have good support from legislators for our ideas.China Entertainment Dinosaur models, I think there's probably a little more awareness of the subject than in the past."
Ellie Hayes, campaign coordi-nator for North Dakotans to Stop Animal Cruelty, which promoted Measure 5, agreed that the campaign boosted awareness."We're calling this a win for the animals of North Dakota," she said. "We brought this issue to the forefront and made people start to realize that North Dakota does have incredibly weak animal cruelty laws."As to Schmidt's vows that his coalition will support legislative improvements, "We plan to hold them to that," Hayes said. Both sides spent heavily to sway voters on Measure 5, with campaign finance reports filed with the secretary of state's office totaling well more than $1 million by last week.

Gentle giant Herman has no beef with humans
We're talking the Mack truck of livestock, with hooves like hubcaps and haunches the size of your car trunk. He weighs nearly 3,000 pounds and goes by Herman. The beefy black-and-white Holstein spends his days munching on hay and soaking up sun outside the Longstreet Inn and Casino in lonely Amargosa Valley, at the southwestern edge of Nye County near the California line.
When Herman first got here, eight years ago, he was about 4 feet tall. At last measure, he stood 6 feet, 4 inches from hoof to withers. His owner, Jim Marsh, believes Herman may be the tallest steer in the world."He just kept growing and growing," said Marsh, an animal lover and longtime Las Vegas car dealership proprietor known for appearing in commercials with his daughter, Stacy, and his grandson.
Marsh, 78, also is known in small towns and cow counties for being a community booster and historic preservationist. He owns a bunch of rural Nevada properties, including the 60-room Longstreet.Herman was born at a nearby dairy, where he was briefly kept as a pet by one of the workers. He ended up in Beatty, where a friend of Marsh's was fattening up the animal for slaughter.

Island's pets lucky to have shelter, animal control
Alameda's pets are fortunate to have two entities to provide high quality care for them. The Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter is a nonprofit that took over the management of the shelter on Jan. 1, 2012.The shelter's staff and volunteers provide a safe and compassionate place for abandoned pets until they find their permanent home. They receive food, medical care, lots of treats and love, are spayed, neutered and microchipped while they wait for their new person.
The City of Alameda employs animal control officers who are responsible for keeping Alameda safe and clean for pets and pet owners. The city has two animal control officers who have jurisdiction over Alameda, including Coast Guard Island.Animal control officers enforce the laws of the city. They pick up stray animals, patrol the streets, parks, beaches, and remove deceased animals. Alameda is well-known for being "the place to be" on Halloween. The much treasured "trick or treat" brings additional responsibilities for pet owners because of challenges on this spooky evening.
A door bell ringing constantly, strange looking people and children expressing excitement can be especially overwhelming for your cat and dog. Secure your pet indoors in a safe place for the evening. Keep candles, chocolate and decorations out of reach of your pet. Black cats are unfortunately targets so be especially careful with them.

Construction can begin on new $5M animal shelter in Sutter County
A building contractor will be given the all-clear today to begin construction on Sutter County's new regional $5 million animal shelter. The decision was made Tuesday night after a solution to a Sutter Animal Services Authority dispute was approved by the Yuba City City Council."This is an essential service and we're going to provide Animatronic Paraceratherium," said Councilman Tej Maan of the 4-0 vote. "But it has been a complicated mess."
Planning the eventual transfer, Puppet Robot Model-Science& Technology Museum Product, chain of command and terms of employment for workers at the animal shelter had authority members at an impasse following perceived threats of litigation from Sutter County last month."I take it seriously when I get papered by the county's attorney," City Manager Steve Jepsen said of the latest wrench thrown in an eight-year animal shelter planning process.
The joint powers authority governing animal services authority has Yuba City eventually taking over as the lead agency for new shelter operations. The city already is the lead agency for construction of the facility.Yuba City is on the hook for 66 percent of construction and operating costs. But Sutter County, which has run the shelter for more than 25 years, has controlled most of the process to date, said Jepsen, who called the arrangement, "a two-headed dog."

Italian rabbit cooked in milk
Silvia Viviano describes herself as "an Italian mum", but is quick to add: "I’m not the classic Italian mamma". She and her husband, who is also Italian, have lived in London for six years. But when it comes to feeding their one-year-old son, Alessandro, they are sticking to Italian tradition – both in terms of diet, and meal times.
Many parents I know consider weaning and feeding potentially picky young people one of the most stressful aspects of parenting. When my daughter was just starting to eat, I ran around reading books, and ringing my mother, arguing with my mother, and declaring that I was no longer speaking to my mother whenever we disagreed about what children should be fed.
If only we were Italian! When deciding what to feed her son, Silvia simply consulted the notes from her paediatrician, which indicated when it was time to add different types of food to his diet. In your regular checks with your state-provided paediatrician in Italy, he or she gives you a detailed schedule of what to feed your baby. Silvia provided this rough outline of the advice from her paediatrician (whom she visits regularly back in Italy.

'Festival of Elephants' coming to Little Falls
A herd of elephants may soon make their home in the city of Little Falls.Little Falls Republican Committee Chairman Roger Stock on Monday afternoon announced the city will be home to the "Festival of Elephants" throughout the month of October. While traveling around New York some communities have horses and some have cows on display with Dinosaur Skeleton Exhibition-T-Rex Fossil.
In response, the city's Republican Committee would like to announce a contest called the 'Festival of Elephants.' It will be a contest of decorating various sizes of elephants to be put on display," he said. The horses Stock referenced can be found in the city of Saratoga Springs. Thirty-five painted fiberglass thoroughbreds were decorated by chosen artists and sponsored by businesses, and have been put on display in and around Saratoga Springs. The horses range from life-size to tabletop size.
The cows can be found throughout the village and town of St. Johnsville and were created as part of a community service project developed Fiberglass Animals Mammoth-Display Item by Sara Thibodeau, an art teacher at St. Johnsville Junior-Senior High School. Thibodeau surveyed her fellow teachers at the school as to what animal they thought would epitomize the surrounding area and received two suggestions — the white-tailed deer and the cow. Made of plywood, the painted cows have become a focal point in the community.

Animals should be treated like fellow being, not possessions
Considering the Star investigation into Marineland, please address the important issue of using animals for entertainment. Even if animals are treated with utmost care, it isn't right to take them out of the wild, keep them in captivity and make them perform for the amusement of humans. Do you agree? We recently "adopted" a new kitten. She's 12 weeks old, and to quote the great Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, she's "cute and adorable — not unlike me".
Before being permitted to take her home, we had to promise, in writing, to keep her in captivity. She was not ever to be allowed outside, on threat of death (not hers, mine) at the hands of Mississauga Animal Services. When the kitten arrived home, she had two needs: food and litterbox. As soon as those were met to her absolute satisfaction, she moved straight to her next priority: someone to play with. Chase me, tickle me, fight with me — she hasn't stopped playing since.
Some animals love to play, and that can cross boundaries between species. I once glanced out the window and saw two animals rolling together on the lawn, our then 22-year-old cat and a fox. They were, clearly, playing, and continued for half an hour, until the fox wandered off exhausted. Yes, that cat went outside, forgive me, Lord.I once swam with dolphins. They were fenced into a mile-long natural cove with a gazillion gallons of seawater. I got into a game of toss-the-seaweed with a big, brawny female (not my type, but at my age one grabs what one can).

New animal services director happy to be home
Before Hurricane Katrina, Riverview native Ian Hallett had never set foot in an animal shelter. But after watching refugees pile into Austin, Texas, with pets they had risked their lives to protect, Hallett was compelled to make a visit and a difference.Soon after, he began volunteering at Austin Animal Services, and within two years was supervisor of animal care. Artificial Landscape,By August 2011, he was in charge of a shelter housing 20,000 dogs and cats.
Hallett, 35, returned home in June to become director of Hillsborough County Animal Services. He hadn't planned on leaving Austin, but coming back just seemed like destiny, he said. In March, while he was here visiting his father in the hospital, the animal services job was posted on the county's website, he said.He felt like he could make a difference here,Dinopark Tyrannosaurus Rides in Outdoor, too.
"At one time, the Austin shelter had a euthanasia rate of 60 percent, and we were able to get that down to 10 percent or less," Hallett said.Right now, Hillsborough County Animal Services has a euthanasia rate of about 65 percent."I hope to half that number and save at least 65 to 75 percent of our animals," Hallett said.Starting in November, Hallett wants to recruit more volunteers and open the shelter seven days a week until 7 p.m. with the goal of adopting out more animals.

A little horse sense, please
After spending millions to create a world-class wild mustang eco-sanctuary in Northern Nevada, philanthropist Madeleine Pickens finds herself at odds with the very people she's trying to help. In all likelihood, some of the best-known wild horse advocates in the country — many of whom are meeting in Las Vegas this week — will end up filing a lawsuit to stop Pickens' plan from moving forward.
It's a complicated legal mess, but in a nutshell, it looks like those crafty dealmakers at BLM are stirring the pot. They've been spreading half-truths about some conditions they have supposedly imposed on Pickens if she wants to get the green light for her plan to take 1,000 or more horses out of government pens and put them onto a gigantic ranch property she purchased near Elko. Pickens needs the BLM's permission to use an adjacent 580,000 acres to supplement her sanctuary.
Those tricksters at BLM have been telling other horse advocates that Pickens will have to wipe out three existing herd-management areas in order to move forward with her sanctuary, and the advocates have been screeching like banshees, holding their wrists to their foreheads and threatening to go to court. The advocates believe that if Pickens wants to rescue a few thousand horses from government corrals and create a model for other public-private sanctuaries, she will sacrifice 1,200 or so wild mustangs living near her property.

Groups helping teachers pay for classroom pets that enrich students without family animal
Experts say many children who enter the first grade can play video games but few have a pet to play with. And teachers say that's a shame, considering how animals — real ones — can enrich a child's upbringing. So for a quarter of a century, educators such as Dawn Slinger in Farmington, Minn., have paid out of their own pockets to provide one for their classrooms. Only in the past few years have groups stepped in to help with the financial burden.
Two years ago, Pets in the Classroom, a Maryland-based project from the nonprofit foundation Pet Care Trust, began offering grants to U.S. and Canadian teachers in grades 1 through 8. The money can be used to buy starter pets, cages, food and other supplies. It issued its 10,000th grant this summer. The $150 grants help offset the cost of the animal and its care, which helps teachers like Slinger who has been using her own money, said foundation executive director Steve King. Just an aquarium for a frog could cost more than a hundred dollars.
Teachers who apply for a second year or more get $50 for additional equipment, food and supplies.Pet Care Trust first started introducing pets to classrooms through a joint venture with the Florida Aquarium in Tampa five years ago. A classroom fish project gave participating teachers a 150-gallon aquarium, supplies and fish, King said. Nearly 200 classrooms in the Tampa area got aquariums, and a similar program was started in Chicago.

Carrie Underwood promotes animal adoption
Animal-lover Carrie Underwood took to the Twitter scene yesterday and posted a number of photos showing her holding armfuls of adorable cats and kittens. "Hanging out at the Checotah animal shelter!," she wrote. "Anyone want a kitten? I think we have a few!!! Ha ha!"The shelter, located in the singer's native town of Checotah, Okla., is a place Underwood tends to visit anytime she comes home. Back in 2009, she established the C.A.T.S. (Checotah Animal, Town, School) foundation as a way of giving back to the community that helped make her a star.
"My hometown is extremely supportive of me and I feel blessed to be able to create something as a way of giving back; to say thank you," she writes on the foundation's site. Back in 2011, Underwood's foundation paid for a new animal shelter for the town. "It funded the building here, and before we had the building she was funding our spaying and neutering," Carol Underwood, Carrie's mom told News6.
While the town pays for utilities and food, C.A.T.S. pays for all the rest, which equals free adoptions for anyone interested in saving a life. "I have always been an animal lover," Underwood told CBS News. "I worked at a vet clinic when I was in college. When I was little I always brought animals into the house, and [nursed] sick animals back to health.

Animals lack designation
Stray animals sent from Sanger to Noah's Ark Animal Shelter are arriving not designated as adoptable or unadoptable, and that has skewed the facility's euthanasia rates, shelter officials said. Those rates have elicited complaints from Sanger residents and prompted the Sanger City Council to consider changing shelters to improve adoption rates, but Noah's Ark officials say they don't understand why.
Sanger's contract with Noah's Ark calls for the city to ship an average of 15 adoptable animals per month. Know the Advantages of Fiberglass Skimboards.Noah's Ark also euthanizes animals for the city under a separate part of the contract after the city deems them sick, disabled or aggressive.Shelter manager Jennifer Keahey said Noah's Ark calculates separate euthanasia rates for adoptable pets and those animals the city deems unadoptable.
"For well over a year, we have received such animals, and it's reflected in our records," she said. "Adoptable animals are vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, spayed or neutered, microchipped and treated for any minor medical issues they might have."However, Keahey said, Sanger began mixing adoptable pets with aggressive and sick animals, leaving assessments to the shelter.

No need to worry, because with these you can still get to play around with your creativity.Aside from sculptures, fountains are also very popular as a garden ornament. The sounds of falling water from the fountain are said to be very soothing and calming. That is why if you prefer a quiet and comfortable feel in your garden where you can sit back and relax anytime you want, these are the best choice.

Kaziranga animal rehab centre turns 10
India's first multi-species animal rehabilitation centre adjoining a national park turned 10 on Monday after giving a new lease of life to more than 1,600 animals. The Centre of Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) near Kaziranga National Park has another first – as nursery for animals Dinosaur Skeleton Exhibition-T-Rex Fossil reintroduced in wildlife preserves from where they had been wiped out.
CRWR was established on this day in 2002 by the Assam forest department and the International Fund for Animal Welfare-Wildlife Trust of India (IFAW-WTI). The 10th anniversary is scheduled for Tuesday. In these 10 years, the centre has nurtured back animals from elephants, bears, rhinos and tigers to hoolock gibbons and porcupines besides reptiles and birds such as Fiberglass Animals-Cobra Snake Model and greater adjutant storks. Among its 'patients' were a calf injured in conflict with people, a rhino orphaned by poachers, an adult tiger gored by rhino and a traumatised leopard trapped in an urban house.
"CWRC addresses cases of wild animals in distress, be it due to natural causes such as floods, or even man-made causes including conflicts. Assam has set numerous exemplary wildlife conservation and welfare milestones for the entire country to follow, and this centre is one of those," Assam's chief wildlife warden Suresh Chand said.CWRC was strategically placed targeting the issue of river Brahmaputra displacing and killing hundreds of Kaziranga animals every year during floods.

Hawaiian Animal Smuggling Plot Exposed
A Maui pilot has pleaded guilty to loading deer on helicopters and flying them from Maui and the Big Island, offering a glimpse into an alleged scheme by hunters to move deer and sheep between the Hawaiian Islands to establish new game populations for their sport.Neither axis deer nor mouflon sheep -- the specific animals involved -- are native to Hawaii and don't have natural predators here. Their presence has damaged fragile native ecosystems and farms on the islands where they've become established.
The alleged animal smugglers took axis deer from Maui to the Big Island and dropped them off to roam. Officials say they took Big Island sheep to a Maui hunting ranch, but apparently didn't release them to the wild. Even so, the sheep's arrival on Maui for the first time deeply concerns conservationists who fear the animals could escape or give others the idea to bring over more.
"Some of our most endangered dry forest community on Maui would definitely be negatively impacted if sheep got established on Maui. They're already being impacted by the deer. The sheep would just be one more thing that was contributing to their demise," said Chuck Chimera, a botanist on Maui involved in efforts to fight invasive species.

Rabbit, grouse populations good for hunting season, DWR says
Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the DWR, said many upland game populations, including cottontail rabbits, go through population cycles. Cottontail rabbits bottomed out in Utah about two years (ago), but their numbers have been climbing since."We've received some really encouraging cottontail rabbit reports," Robinson said, "especially from the eastern and southern parts of the state. In some cases, biologists are seeing more rabbits than they've seen in several years."
However, Robinson cautions that you won't find rabbits China Exhibition Dinosaurs manufacturers. "Overall," he said, "populations are still fairly low. But if you find a pocket of rabbits, you can enjoy some great hunting."To find rabbits, Robinson encourages you to focus your efforts in two areas: The bottom of draws that have tall shrubs or in rocky outcroppings where rabbits have their burrows.
"Early morning is the best time of day to locate Life Size Dimetrodon Model," he said. "Cottontails have a broad range, and most areas in Utah have them."To find the best pockets of habitat, Robinson recommends scouting a location close to home that you can visit multiple times.DWR biologists in south-central and southwestern Utah are reporting good numbers of cottontail rabbits in most of the counties in that part of the state.

Seven rescued rabbits perish due to poor health
Seven of the 222 rabbits removed from Bunny Magic Wildlife and Rabbit Rescue Inc. in Lusby last week have died.Lt. Steve Jones of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office said the more than 200 rabbits removed from the rescue were taken to the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville, where some received medical treatment. Jones said all of the rabbits that were taken were in poor health and had "grooming issues."
"Where the rabbits were being contained [at the rescue] … was unhealthy," Jones said. "Some were underfed and not well taken care of."Jones said that seven of the rabbits have died due to being in such poor health. The rest of the rabbits will remain at the shelter until they are healthy enough to be adopted and the Calvert County State's Attorney's Office and Animal Control conclude their investigation, he said.
County officials executed a search warrant and removed the sick and injured rabbits Aug. 8 from the shelter after receiving a complaint July 24 from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that the rabbits were living in inhumane conditions.PETA was notified of the rabbits being kept in poor conditions by a whistleblower, and a PETA investigator then confirmed the conditions.

Are Butterflies Two Different Animals in One ?
What he's saying is, while a moth appears to be one animal, with a wormy start and a flying finish, it's actually two animals — two in one! We start with a baby caterpillar that lives a full life and then dies, dissolves. There's a pause. Then a new animal, the moth, springs to life, from the same cells, reincarnated.
According to this theory, long, long ago, two very different animals, one destined to be wormy, the other destined to take wing, accidently mated, and somehow their genes learned to live side-by-side in their descendants. But their genes never really integrated. They are sharing a DNA molecule like two folks sharing a car, except half way through the trip, one driver dissolves and up pops his totally different successor.
Many insects begin life as worm-shaped, leggy, tubular thingies that spend lots of time eating. We call them grubs or maggots or caterpillars, and they are programmed by a set of genes that sit in their DNA, spelled out in chemical letters, A, C, T and G.Notice I've put my "caterpillar" instruction genes on the left side of the DNA. The instructions on the right side are, temporarily, silent.

I have a friend who told me about all the benefits of bamboo flooring. He is installing his floors later this month. I am still somewhat guarded about them because they are more of a manufactured floor like a laminate, as far as I understand.

White Lions, Tigers Join Animal Family At Jungle Island
Jungle Island staff welcomed a very rare group of animals to its pride last week: Royal White tigers Chakra and Bindi, snow tigers Saraswati and Amar, and the king of the clan, Lord Ivory the white lion. The unique animals are a part of the park's new “Lion's Den” exhibit, where visitors can walk up to the glass to get an up-close look.
According to CBS Miami, the animals are old friends.“They've actually all been raised together, they're actually best friends so to speak so we should have no issues with that, they're just getting a really nice new home,” park curator Dr. Jason Chatfield told CBS Miami.White lions like Lord Ivory are rare in number, with only about 300 found in the world, according to a release from the park.
Their coloring is the result of a color mutation and they range from bright white to a "darker" blonde shade. The white tigers also have a genetic condition leading to the absence of the tell-tale orange coloring. Some white tigers have almost undetectable lighter stripes, and those who are completely white are known as snow tigers.

Owners to run 2-year-olds without race-day drugs
Hoping to show that horse racing can wean itself off its reliance on drugs, Barry Irwin has joined a group of prominent thoroughbred owners voluntarily pledging to run their 2-year-olds this year without any race-day medication. In doing so, they put themselves in the middle of a debate about the role of drugs in thoroughbred racing that is getting attention in Congress.
The group, featuring a stable of well-known names in horse ownership and breeding circles, vowed to compete in this year's 2-year-old season without race-day use of the commonly used anti-bleeding drug furosemide, which is marketed as Lasix and Salix. It's the only medication allowed to be given to horses on race day in the U.S. The drug is used commonly to treat pulmonary hemorrhaging in racehorses.
The drug is banned across much of the world because it is considered a performance enhancer.Irwin, whose Team Valor International won last year's Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom, said Thursday he hopes the willingness of some leading owners to compete without race-day use of the drug will change perceptions in the sport."Most of these guys are afraid to train without it, and they have scared the hell out of their owners, telling them all sorts of things could happen to their horses if they don't have them run on Lasix," he said. "I've been around long enough that I know that's not the case."

Boats offer club speed, variety
The Noank Rowing Club has been offering rowing classes for beginning through advanced rowers in Beebe cove for years, but until recently, it offered programs for all of those levels of rowers in the same beginners' boats. This summer, that will no longer be the case.Dinosaur Fossil Replica Landscape-Triceratops Skeleton. The club recently acquired two Olympic-quality boats to which the club's members now have access. These four-person sculling shells allow members to now get the feel of the highest quality of boat available today.
The boats were purchased from two different crew organizations in Boston and Narragansett, R.I. Recognizable by their yellow color, these shells are built using fiberglass and wood and are designed to cut through the water more quickly than the club's older boats, Dinosaur Skeleton Exhibition-T-Rex Fossil, many of which are designed for stability rather than speed. Not only are the new boats the fastest shells the club offers; they are also the best quality.
"These shells are Olympic quality and are built to be long lasting," said rowing instructor Kristen Negaard O'Brien. The boats also create new opportunities for the club. In past years, the club has used its old shells while competing in the Coast Weeks Regatta. This is a race at Mystic Seaport to which the club has only sent junior rowers in the past. Because of the newly-acquired, more advanced boats, the club will now be able to send older, more experienced rowers, called "masters," to the race.

Tour company rescues injured turtle
An injured sea turtle was flown by Aloha Airlines Cargo to O‘ahu for treatment of its wounds Tuesday. The turtle, estimated to be around 25 to 30 years old by the state's District Fisheries biologist Don Heacock, was discovered by an operator aboard Bali Hai Tours Tuesday morning near the Double Caves at Kalala‘u, said Mike Sheehan of Hanalei. Sheehan transported the injured turtle to the Aloha Airlines cargo terminal in Lihu‘e where they were met by Heacock.
"They saw some bubbles in the water and after diving to investigate, discovered the turtle which had sustained propeller strikes," Sheehan said. "They brought it back to Hanalei and washed out the wound with sea water before transporting."Heacock said the turtle sustained perforations in her right lung, her lower intestines are showing and there are indications of five or six propeller strikes on her shell. He called in that assessment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries office.
"Luckily, the propeller missed the turtle's spine (and) head," Heacock said. "The turtle is a healthy female and other than signs of a previous encounter with a shark, is fine."He said the turtle will be flown to O‘ahu and the care of George Balazs, the NOAA Fisheries Sea Turtle Research lead.Heacock explained that the use of fiberglass and pins are similar to human surgeries and are used to help the area heal from its injuries.

At last year's Ederle Swim, Otto-Moudry finished second to Morrison in a women's course record time of 5:36.04.According to nycswim.org, competitions involving swimming between Manhattan and Sandy Hook date back almost 100 years. NYC Swim held its first Ederle Swim in 2006. The record from Manhattan to Sandy Hook is held by Lance Ogren in 5:10.00.

Friends seek traces of missing wild horse activist
After weeks without any news of her whereabouts, friends and family of Kim Remmel, a 47-year-old Arvada woman active in animal welfare causes, are appealing to the public for information that might help solve the mystery of her disappearance. Returning to Afghanistan.Remmel was last seen on May 25 and is believed to have left her residence early in the following morning.
Remmel was last seen by friends over dinner and was described as being "in a happy and relaxed frame of mind" that evening. She returned to her home, where she lives with her aunt and her cat, and left the next morning in her white pickup truck, taking her laptop computer. No one has heard from her since. Remmel advocated for wild horses and burros, was a vocal opponent of the government roundups of horses on public lands, and was involved in Belgian Malinois rescue and training. She liked to hike in Jefferson County open space areas and parks, including Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
Although the Find Kim Remmel Facebook Page describes her as "somewhat estranged" from some members of her family, the lack of contact with any friends -- as well as the fact that she left her cat behind -- has raised concerns. Her vehicle is described as being a white Mazda pickup from the late 1980s or early 1990s, with black trim and an older (non-fiberglass) black canopy, license plate 155XYX. The tailgate has only the letters NADA (or TADA) instead of MAZDA. Remmel sometimes wears glasses and may have been wearing a baseball cap or cowboy hat, as well as jeans and a T-shirt.

Returning to Afghanistan
When doctors told Army Specialist Michael Krapels that he would never redeploy, much less walk again, he refused to accept it."I took it as a personal challenge to work at rehabilitating myself and reconditioning myself back into the shape I needed to be in to do my job," Krapels said. "After a while, the task of returning to my unit consumed me."
Krapels, 24, of Sparta, was injured on Jan. 14, 2010, when a fellow soldier's machine gun misfired, shooting Krapels in both legs while he lay in bed. Now, two years after the accident, he is prepared to return to Afghanistan with his unit this week."I wanted to return to duty and redeploy with my unit because it is my duty as a soldier," Krapels said. "I signed a five-year contract to the Army and my country. I believe that when you make a commitment, you see it through to the end."
Krapels is currently stationed in Vicenza, Italy with the Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, but his unit is scheduled to leave for Afghanistan, although Krapels is unable to discuss any other details of the pending deployment.Getting to this redeployment has been a long road for Krapels and his family. When he was first shot, he was flown to an Army hospital in Germany and then Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington D.C.

Rio+20 is greatest threat to biodiversity
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development is underway in Rio de Janeiro. This time, 20 years after the original 1992 Rio "Earth Summit," thousands of politicians, bureaucrats and environmental activists are toning down references to "dangerous man-made climate change," to avoid repeating the acrimony and failures that characterized its recent climate conferences in Copenhagen, Cancun and Durban.
Instead, "Rio+20" is trying to shift attention to "biodiversity" and alleged threats to plant and animal species, as the new "greatest threat" facing Planet Earth. This rebranding is "by design," according to conference organizers, who say sustainable development and biodiversity is an "easier sell" these days than climate change: a simpler path to advance the same radical goals.
Those goals include expanded powers and budgets for the United Nations, UN Environment Programme, US Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies, and their allied Green pressure groups; new taxes on international financial transactions (to ensure perpetual independent funding for the UN and UNEP); and more mandates and money for "clean, green, renewable" energy.

Georgia Museum of Natural History now easier to find
Many people don't even know the museum exists, much less how to find it on the University of Georgia campus, even though its constantly growing collections now number more than 6 million specimens. Most of the museum's holdings are stored off the main UGA campus in an Atlanta Highway warehouse, but some are on public display in a small gallery space in the museum's headquarters, hidden near the UGA steam plant at the intersection of Cedar Drive and East Campus Road.
But last week, workers from UGA's Physical Plant hung two large fiberglass models from the museum's outside brick walls — a big white shark and an orca, or killer whale — which now mark the museum's entrance.“We put them up there to advertise the presence of the museum,” said museum director Bud Freeman. “I think it's going to generate interest, and that's what we're after.”
The two models once were part of a museum in the state Capitol building, but a few years ago, state officials shut down the natural history section of that museum to concentrate on the political and historical exhibits. The models of the shark and whale have been in storage at UGA since, but recently the museum commissioned a taxidermist to spiff up the models, repainting them and coating them with clear preservative.Micro Stock racing on the rise.

Micro Stock racing on the rise
When Legends Cars first came about in 1993, they hit the country by storm as this new scaled down race car, which was a copy of the early Modified stock cars, had a huge fan appeal and was dubbed affordable and was basically a get in and go deal.Soon after others began to look to the downsized fabrication of the bigger counterparts and today there are Legends, Slingshots, 600cc Modifieds, Stage 1 Modifieds and the list goes on.
However, the original concept of scaled race cars was the brainchild of Bob Wagner, Sr., of Wharton, NJ with his creation of the Micro Stock. The first car built had its debut in 1977 at the defunct Pine Brook Speedway in New Jersey which was a 1/10-mile paved oval that hosted weekly TQ Midgets. Wagner felt there was room to add a class to the card but what type of car was the question due to the size of the track.
That's when he got the idea to put a body overtop of a go-kart chassis which had a full roll cage. He decided to go with a fiberglass Modified body. The engine was a 5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton."We call him the Godfather of Micro Stocks," said his son, Bob Wagner, Jr. "The First one was just a go-kart. He made the body first then he made a chassis to fit the body. It was just like a regular 1937 Ford only scaled down.

Friends of India hosts colorful, festive party
Vibrant colors filling the sky paled in comparison to those covering the attendees themselves Saturday at the sixth annual Color and Kite Festival. The event, sponsored by Friends of India Society and held at Buena Vista Camping Park, brought to life two celebrated Indian traditions with origins dating thousands of years. The first tradition at the biggest local Indian party of the year got under way as groups of attendees sent thousands of brightly colored Indian-made paper kites skyward.
Is Southeast Asia the New Garment-Sweatshop Capital of the World?A gentle but steady breeze and a backdrop of a clear blue sky made for perfect kite-flying conditions.Recent Temple University graduate Jay Shukla of Mays Landing explained how intense kite flying can get in his home country, as he taught his younger relatives to how to fly the kites. In India, he said, “some write the last name of their family on the kites and fight them with others from terraced apartments. The fiberglass string they use cut others’ strings, and it can get really serious.”
All the kite flying Saturday remained peaceful, however. In India, a huge kite festival is observed each Jan. 14 when the wind is right and the days start growing longer. After the kites were reeled in, there were friendly games of cricket, traditional and Bollywood-style dances, and awards. The Friends of India Society honored Latish Menghani of Vineland with its Person of the Year Award for his “enthusiastic help and availability” and presented a Special Recognition Award to Dr. Bhavna Patel of Vineland for her “leadership and contributions” to the Sanskaar Youth Grou

Is Southeast Asia the New Garment-Sweatshop Capital of the World?
Thousands of migrant workers in Southeast Asia suffer "dangerously negligent" wage and workplace standards in the name of affordable fashion, according to a new report from War on Want and the Asian Immigrant Center. Workers interviewed for the study, which focuses on women who migrated to Thailand and Malaysia and within Cambodia to find work in the garment industry, frequently cited 10-hour days without overtime pay, chronic harassment, unsafe working and living environments, and below-subsistence wages.
They were also prevented from organizing, taking sick leave, going outside factory grounds, or becoming pregnant. Even minor "transgressions" such as missing a day of work, arriving late, or a trip to the bathroom could result in fines and penalties.Despite their importance to these countries' economic growth, migrant women's rights are consistently violated by those who would employ them, according to the study. Local governments fail to provide even the most nominal protection, in some cases creating policies that restrict workers from exercising their rights or fighting for better conditions.
"Once in the employment sector, workers are given little to no job security," the report notes. "Migrants live in a temporary and precarious state—which is beneficial to the employers, who can hire and fire according to demand, but which is detrimental to a worker's life, livelihood, and future."High-street retailers such as Gap, Zara, Marks & Spencer, and H&M do not operate the factories they contract in these countries, but they profit from the rampant exploitation.

University Of Michigan Makes Fuel-Efficient Car
A group of engineering students at the University of Michigan are trying to prove that a car can get about 3,300 miles per gallon using a modified lawnmower engine. The group will enter a single-person fuel efficient vehicle in the 2012 SAE International Supermileage Challenge, which will take place in Marshall, Michigan on June 7 and 8. The team hopes to beat the current record of 3,169 miles per gallon at the competition.
"The University of Michigan has an incredible legacy of student automative design team success," says Laura Pillari, the team's co-founder and project manager told AnnArbor.comMichigan's new fuel-efficient car comes just in time. A new survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center says for most people mileage is the most important factor in a new car purchase.
Catskill hosts purrfect annual art show!Until recently, the fiberglass boat, which was built in 1974, had been at Crozier Craft's west Port Angeles facility on Edgewood Drive where Chad Crozier and his team gutted it and fabricated an aluminum pilot house, fish boxes, fuel tanks and bulwarks. In the building, which can accommodate most boats up to 60 feet in length, is the former Viking Mist, a 36-foot Radon owned by Dan Green of Neah Bay.

Catskill hosts purrfect annual art show
This weekend, Catskill's cat-loving population purred and flocked to the streets as part of the Cat'n Around Catskill 2012.The number of cats shown this year might have been smaller than previous six showings, but 43 decorated fiberglass cats adorned the streets of Catskill as part of the summer-long arts event that has had more than 300 feline artwork displays in all.
This year's litter included a creation that looked like a rooster, another that resembled a soda vending machine, one shimmering in knight's armor and another that looked like a jack-o-lantern, according to an article in The Daily Freeman. The cat creations will be auctioned off at an annual gala at Historic Catskill Point on Sept. 30. The proceeds will be split between the artists and arts education, animal welfare, local non-profits, local food banks and future Catskill promotions.
The feline displays are scattered throughout Catskill, however most of the creations are show on Main Street, county Route 23 B and two cats will be on U.S. Route 9W in front of the Wine Cellar and McDonalds. One cat display will be traded for a Rip Van Winkle statue in the village of Hunter.

U.S. Scientists Harness Thousands of Invisibility Cloaks to Trap a Rainbow
Harry Potter's disguise of choice isn't just for stalking the halls of Hogwarts sight unseen. Scientists from Towson University and the University of Maryland have harnessed the power of 25,000 invisibility cloaks to slow down—and even stop—light, producing what is colloquially known as a “trapped rainbow.” A mere 30-micrometers in diameter, each “cape” comprises a micro-lens that bends light around itself, effectively obscuring an area in its center.
Slowed-down light interacts differently with molecules than light traveling at regular speeds, which means that trapped rainbows can help identify biological materials based on how much light they absorb and emit. Applied to biosensors in fluorescence spectroscopy, they can also promote more-detailed analyses. The benefit of a biochip array is that you have a large number of small sensors, meaning you can perform many tests at once,” says Vera Smolyaninova, lead author of the study, which was presented in the New Journal of Physics on Friday. “For example, you could test for multiple genetic conditions in a person's DNA in just one go.”
Because it allows researchers to examine fluorescence at thousands of points simultaneously, the technology is the key to making “spectroscopy on a chip” a reality, 67 animals died at WB zoo in eight months,Smolyaninova adds. No spells, charms, or hexes necessary.Laid out uniformly on a 25-millimeter gold sheet, the materials form a first-of-its-kind array, manipulating bands of light through the intervening gaps to create the optical phenomenon.

67 animals died at WB zoo in eight months
Sources said 67 animals including tigers, lions, chimpanzees, marmosets, kangaroos, birds and snakes, died here between August 2011 and March 2012.The zoo had recorded 57 animal deaths in 2009-10 and 52 to 53 deaths in 2010-11.Among the animals that died are three of the six red kangaroos brought from Czech Republic in June 2011. Two new-born marmosets died in November 2011."The maximum number of casualties is among birds and reptiles. A total of 30 birds and 20 snakes have died over the past eight months,"a senior zoo official said.
According to former zoo inspector Swapan Ghosh, animal deaths in zoos are triggered by three factors-population of old and sick animals, lack of proper veterinary care and unforeseen incidents such as a disease outbreak."But 67 deaths in eight months, or one death in every 4 to 5 days, is highly unusual,"Ghosh, said. However, state Forest minister Hiten Burman claimed to be ignorant of the deaths."Is it true that 67 animals have died in eight months? I'm not aware of that. I'll have to inquire. I'll ask for a report from the zoo authorities,"Burman told Deccan Herald.
"In fact, neither the Zoo authorities nor the government has an idea of running the park. As the animals in the zoo are taken out of their natural habitat and placed in an artificial environment they always need special care. Their condition is not only delicate but fragile too and the zoo authorities need to take care of that but unfortunately enough these factors are never taken under consideration,"a former director of the Alipore Zoo told Deccan Herald.

Stuart man's replica of Carolina Snowball preserves rare albino dolphin's legacy
Like it is with many Baby Boomers, a discussion with Stuart's Kevin Vanacore, 58, soon turns to his greatest passion. It's not real estate or collector cars that gets Vanacore speaking with his hands. Instead, the Connecticut native lights up when he begins to speak about a dolphin. But not just any dolphin. This dolphin was special. This dolphin was albino. He eventually landed a job training dolphins by the end of the 1970s at Marineland near St. Augustine. But part of the reason he chose to pursue that profession was Snowball's fame. She was written about in newspapers, filmed in news reports and even had a story about her in Life Magazine.
Carolina Snowball was a common dolphin, a marine mammal 8 feet long and weighing about 400 pounds. She was unique in that she was truly albino, a rare genetic mutation that rendered her normally gray skin entirely white. She lived in the early 1960s and was first observed in the wild in her native waters of St. Helena Sound near Beaufort, S.C. Her strikingly snow-white skin made her a target for collection and controversy, but ultimately an ambassador for awareness.
Although Snowball died in captivity in 1965, Vanacore is committed to keeping her legacy alive. For Vanacore,Guam needs sustainable aquaculture, a property manager who moved to Stuart in September, Snowball was a huge influence on his life. To him, she was more important than Flipper, the 88-episode TV star from 1964 to 1967, mainly because Snowball was a single animal while Flipper was portrayed by several dolphins. Growing up in East Haven, Conn., Vanacore had a love for the water and the marine wildlife that inhabited it.

Guam needs sustainable aquaculture
Like farming chickens or pigs for your family to eat or to sell at the market, aquaculture is the practice of farming fish or shellfish for human consumption. And just like any animal farming operation, aquaculture involves the management of animal waste -- in this case, fish poop.Something that makes aquaculture unique is that all the animals and their waste are contained and suspended in water. Figuring out the best way to process this wastewater for the health of the animals and the surrounding environment is one of the greatest challenges with aquaculture.
Local resident Joan Cofac of Talofofo says she is concerned about the environmental impact of aquaculture in Guam. She questions whether we can trust that fish farms are operating responsibly. For the past 10 years, she says she's witnessed a decline in the water quality of Talofofo Bay, which she believes is due to the runoff coming from a fish farm up river."It used to be nice and clear, now it's cloudy. We can't swim in the bay anymore because we're told it's polluted," she says.
She is also concerned about the regulation of imported eggs for aquaculture. "Without testing these eggs, how do we know they are tilapia, and not an invasive frog species?"Without updated information on these issues, she feels that the public is left in the dark. If the industry was better regulated and citizens were better informed, then people could hold irresponsible fish farmers accountable for their actions. Until that happens, she says she "would like to see the industry closed."

Furniture and household items
Take furniture, rugs, bedding and clothing outside to dry as soon as possible. Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier to remove moisture or open at least two windows to ventilate with outdoor air. Use fans to circulate air in the house. If mold and mildew have already developed, brush off items outdoors to prevent scattering spores in the house. Vacuum floors, ceilings and walls to remove mildew, then wash with disinfectant. Wear a two-strap protective mask to prevent breathing mold spores.
Mattresses should be thrown away.Upholstered furniture soaks up contaminants from floodwaters and should be cleaned only by a professional.Wood veneered furniture is usually not worth the cost and effort of repair. Solid wood furniture can usually be restored, unless damage is severe.Toys and stuffed animals may have to be thrown away if they've been contaminated by floodwaters.
Photographs, books and important papers can be frozen and cleaned later. They should be dried carefully and slowly. Wash the mud off and store the articles in plastic bags and put them in a frost-free freezer to protect from mildew and further damage until you have time to thaw and clean them or take them to a professional.Wallboard acts like a sponge when wet. Remove wallboard, plaster and paneling to at least the flood level. If soaked by contaminated floodwater, it can be a permanent health hazard and should be removed.

Is Origami the Future of Tech ?
In 1996 a young mathematician and computer scientist named Erik Demaine became fascinated by a magic trick that Harry Houdini used to do before he made his name as an escape artist. The magician would fold a piece of paper flat a few times, make one straight cut with a pair of scissors, and then unfold the paper to reveal a five-pointed star. Other magicians built on Houdini's fold-and-cut method over the years, creating more intricate shapes: a single letter, for example, or a chain of stars. Is the Fiberglass in Your Attic or Walls Causing Cancer ?
It's an odd subject of study for a computer science professor, but Demaine had an unorthodox background. When he was hired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001, he was, at 20, the youngest professor in the university's history. Pale, thin, and soft-spoken, with a pickpocket's long fingers and a fox-colored ponytail, Demaine was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and raised by his father, Martin, a renowned glass blower.
When Demaine was six, he and his father started a puzzle company. When he was seven, his father took him out of school and they spent four years traveling the U.S., choosing their destinations together. They spent a few months in Florida, Demaine recalls, “because it was so flat and good for riding bicycles.” Martin home-schooled his son while they moved from place to place. The traveling stopped when Erik returned to Halifax to enroll in Dalhousie University at age 12.

Is the Fiberglass in Your Attic or Walls Causing Cancer ?
Fiberglass, also known as fibrous glass or glass wool, is a man-made fiber used to insulate homes, furnace filters, pipes, appliances and more; it's also used for sound control in airplanes and automobiles, and in certain curtains, roofing material and plastics. As its name implies, the main substance in fiberglass is glass, which is finely spun to form a mass that resembles wool.
When working with or installing this material, the small fibers can be swallowed or inhaled, where they may remain in your lungs for long periods of time, potentially leading to health problems like cancer.Since fiberglass first entered the market in the 1930s, it is now among the most widely used insulating materials in the world, which is why concerns that it may cause cancer need to be taken seriously.

Fiberglass was nominated as a top safety concern on the synthetic mineral fiber list for the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) back in 1994. At that time, it was listed as “reasonably expected to be a human carcinogen" by the National Toxicology Program (NTP).

State may give animal shelters a break on license fees
Missouri lawmakers have moved to reduce state licensing fees for animal shelters and commercial breeders as nerves remain raw following recent battles over the dog-breeding industry.Legislation approved last week by the Missouri House eventually would exempt animal shelters from the fees while reducing the maximum charges that commercial breeders pay for licenses from the state Department of Agriculture. Shelters lost an exemption from fees under a law approved in 2010, and the license charges for shelters, commercial breeders, kennels and others was increased last year from a maximum of $500 up to $2,500.
Operators also pay a $25 fee to cover state efforts to crack down on unlicensed facilities.Animal welfare groups groups contend not-for-profit animal shelters should not be required to pay the fees because their purpose is to help the community and not to earn money. One organization likened the charges to levying a hotel tax on homeless shelters. But opponents of exempting shelters from the fees argue that all facilities should pay their fair share toward Missouri's animal regulation efforts.
“The humane societies and shelters are not profiting from caring for these animals. They're doing this as an act of love for the animals and as a service for their community,” said Bob Baker, executive director of the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.Major Group Says Government Diluted Fiberglass Cancer Results. He added: “It would be like them saying you go in and inspect homeless shelters to make sure that they're providing proper care for the people and that they don't violate fire codes, but you don't go and tax them for those inspections.”

Major Group Says Government Diluted Fiberglass Cancer Results
Fiberglass is highly common in not only homes and schools, but it can also be found in consumer items like toothpaste and certain medications. Beyond that, it could occupy the air you breathe. And thanks to one report that asserts the safety of the substance — which a leading organization is now calling fraudulent and outright wrong — fiberglass is still being used on a major scale.
Fiberglass was nominated as a leading safety issue on the synthetic mineral fiber list for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) back in 1994. It was even documented as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” by the National Institutes of Health in its 2011 “Report on Carcinogens.”So why is it still so prominent in your daily life? One final report by the NIH dismissed all of the previous findings and concerns, saying that there was “no evidence of carcinogenicity” surrounding fiberglass.
A curious result, as the previous evidence had already suggested a link between fiberglass and cancer – a result that the National Association of Clean Air Agencies (NACAA), a major organization in the fight for toxin-free air, says is based on faulty information. The group asserts that the formula the EPA and NIH examined to determine whether or not fiberglass poses a cancer risk was seriously diluted, making fiberglass appear to be safe. The result is the OSHA listing fiberglass as ‘safe’ for workers, and allowing them heavy exposure on a daily basis.
